# Step-by-step procedures with read receipts

Step-by-step procedures with read receipts is a SaaS idea for owners of clinics, restaurants, salons and small franchises, priced to test at $49 a month per business. Know-how lives in the owner’s head and a few old documents. With it, small teams write procedures with photos once, staff confirm they’ve read them, and the owner sees who still needs training.

_Published 19 Oct 2026. A starting point we wrote, not market research: run the 7-day test before you build._

## What problem does it solve?

Know-how lives in the owner’s head and a few old documents. New staff learn by watching, mistakes repeat, and nobody can show who was trained on what.

**Why now:** Small businesses train new staff all year round, and AI can now draft a procedure from a quick voice note.

## What do they use today?

Most small businesses keep a binder of printed pages or a folder of documents, and train new people by having them follow a colleague. Training is recorded, if at all, in a tick list.

## How does it work?

The owner writes a procedure once, adding steps, photos and a short video, and assigns it to a role such as front desk or kitchen. Each person in that role reads it, step by step, and presses the read-and-confirm button when done. The owner sees at a glance who is trained on what, and people assigned to a procedure get an email when it changes.

## What goes in the first version?

- Procedures with steps, photos and short videos
- Procedures assigned by role
- A read-and-confirm button for each person
- Who is trained on what, at a glance
- An email when a procedure changes

## Who pays, and how much?

- **Who pays:** Owners of clinics, restaurants, salons and small franchises
- **Price to test:** $49 a month per business

One price per business suits an owner who writes procedures for the whole team, with no need to count staff or procedures. It replaces the binder and the training tick list the business keeps now.

## How to test it in 7 days

1. Ask five owners how they train new staff today.
2. Write one procedure for a friendly business and watch a new hire use it.
3. Offer a free setup to three businesses.

## Where to find the first customers

- Franchise owner associations
- r/smallbusiness
- Business coaches who work with clinics and salons

## What are the risks?

- Owners rarely find time to write, so drafting must be fast.
- Knowledge-base tools are cheap, so the angle is training records.

## How to build it on shipanysaas

4 of the parts it needs are already in the kit, the phone app with the All-in plan. Get the kit, open it in Claude Code, Codex or Cursor, and paste the starting prompt.

**Already in the kit:** Teams and roles, Billing, Emails, Phone app with All-in

**You build:**

- Procedure editor with photos and video
- Read confirmations per person
- Training overview by role

[Get the kit](https://www.shipanysaas.com/pricing)

### The starting prompt

```text
You are in a fresh copy of the shipanysaas starter kit, a pnpm and Turborepo monorepo: the Next.js web app is in apps/web and the Supabase database, with its migrations, in apps/web/supabase; with the All-in plan, the Expo phone app is in apps/native. Help me build the first version of Step-by-step procedures with read receipts.
Read AGENTS.md first, then the AGENTS.md in every folder you work in: the kit's rules there win over your defaults. When a skill in .agents/skills (also in .claude/skills and .cursor/skills) matches a task, use it.
## The product
- What it does: Small teams write procedures with photos once, staff confirm they’ve read them, and the owner sees who still needs training.
- Who pays: Owners of clinics, restaurants, salons and small franchises
- Their problem: Know-how lives in the owner’s head and a few old documents. New staff learn by watching, mistakes repeat, and nobody can show who was trained on what.
- Price to test: $49 a month per business (a plan in apps/web/config/billing.config.ts)
## Build only this first version
1. Procedures with steps, photos and short videos
2. Procedures assigned by role
3. A read-and-confirm button for each person
4. Who is trained on what, at a glance
5. An email when a procedure changes
## Already in the kit: reuse it, never rebuild it
- Teams and roles: team accounts with members, roles and invitations
- Billing: Stripe or Lemon Squeezy subscriptions, per seat or usage-based, and one-off payments
- Emails: transactional email through Resend or Nodemailer
- Phone app: an iPhone, iPad and Android app on the same backend (All-in plan)
## New code it needs
- Procedure editor with photos and video
- Read confirmations per person
- Training overview by role
## How to work
1. Plan first: list the database tables (with row-level security, so each team only sees its own rows), the pages and the server actions for the first feature. Then stop and wait for my OK.
2. Build one feature at a time with the kit's own UI and form components, with a migration for every schema change and user-facing text in the translation files.
3. After each feature, run the verification steps in AGENTS.md, fix what they find, and tell me what you built and what comes next.
## Rules
- Ask me before you add a dependency, delete a file, or change sign-in, billing or the admin panel.
- Leave the parts of the kit this product doesn't use as they are.
- If apps/native is not in your copy (the Starter plan), build the web app only.
Done when every first-version feature works for a signed-in team and the AGENTS.md checks pass.
