# AI cost per customer for AI-powered SaaS

AI cost per customer for AI-powered SaaS is a SaaS idea for founders of SaaS products that call AI models on their customers’ behalf, priced to test at $49 a month. AI bills arrive as one number while customers pay flat plans. With it, founders see what each customer costs in AI tokens, next to what that customer pays.

_Published 19 Oct 2026. A starting point we wrote, not market research: run the 7-day test before you build._

## What problem does it solve?

AI bills arrive as one number while customers pay flat plans. A few heavy users can make an account lose money, and founders find out at the end of the month.

**Why now:** More SaaS products call AI models on every request yet still sell flat plans, so the margin hides inside one bill.

## What do they use today?

Most founders open the model provider’s bill when it arrives and guess which customers drove it. A few paste usage logs and payment exports into a spreadsheet and rebuild it by hand whenever something looks off.

## How does it work?

A founder adds the small SDK to the code that calls the model and passes in the customer’s id with each request. Each day the product turns token counts and model prices into a cost for every customer, then lines it up against that customer’s revenue from the payment provider. If an account costs more than it pays, the founder gets an alert, and a margin email arrives weekly.

## What goes in the first version?

- A small SDK that tags each AI call with a customer id
- Cost per customer per day, from token counts and model prices
- Revenue per customer from Stripe, side by side
- An alert when an account costs more than it pays
- A weekly margin email

## Who pays, and how much?

- **Who pays:** Founders of SaaS products that call AI models on their customers’ behalf
- **Price to test:** $49 a month

A flat monthly price fits founders who already pay for their model provider, hosting and billing every month. With no seat count or usage meter to work out, a solo founder can add it without asking anyone.

## How to test it in 7 days

1. Ask in r/SaaS how founders track AI cost per customer.
2. Interview five founders of AI products about their last surprise bill.
3. Build a spreadsheet version for two of them from their own logs.

## Where to find the first customers

- r/SaaS and Indie Hackers
- AI builder communities on Discord and X
- Newsletters for AI product founders

## What are the risks?

- Model providers and gateways keep adding usage dashboards.
- Founders must change code to tag calls, so setup has to take minutes.

## How to build it on shipanysaas

4 of the parts it needs are already in the kit. Get the kit, open it in Claude Code, Codex or Cursor, and paste the starting prompt.

**Already in the kit:** Teams and roles, Billing, Admin panel, Emails

**You build:**

- SDK that tags AI calls with customer ids
- Cost math from model prices
- Stripe revenue import and margin alerts

### The starting prompt

```text
You are in a fresh copy of the shipanysaas starter kit, a pnpm and Turborepo monorepo: the Next.js web app is in apps/web and the Supabase database, with its migrations, in apps/web/supabase. Help me build the first version of AI cost per customer for AI-powered SaaS.
Read AGENTS.md first, then the AGENTS.md in every folder you work in: the kit's rules there win over your defaults. When a skill in .agents/skills (also in .claude/skills and .cursor/skills) matches a task, use it.
## The product
- What it does: Founders see what each customer costs in AI tokens, next to what that customer pays.
- Who pays: Founders of SaaS products that call AI models on their customers’ behalf
- Their problem: AI bills arrive as one number while customers pay flat plans. A few heavy users can make an account lose money, and founders find out at the end of the month.
- Price to test: $49 a month (a plan in apps/web/config/billing.config.ts)
## Build only this first version
1. A small SDK that tags each AI call with a customer id
2. Cost per customer per day, from token counts and model prices
3. Revenue per customer from Stripe, side by side
4. An alert when an account costs more than it pays
5. A weekly margin email
## Already in the kit: reuse it, never rebuild it
- Teams and roles: team accounts with members, roles and invitations
- Billing: Stripe or Lemon Squeezy subscriptions, per seat or usage-based, and one-off payments
- Admin panel: a super-admin panel that needs two-step sign-in
- Emails: transactional email through Resend or Nodemailer
## New code it needs
- SDK that tags AI calls with customer ids
- Cost math from model prices
- Stripe revenue import and margin alerts
## How to work
1. Plan first: list the database tables (with row-level security, so each team only sees its own rows), the pages and the server actions for the first feature. Then stop and wait for my OK.
2. Build one feature at a time with the kit's own UI and form components, with a migration for every schema change and user-facing text in the translation files.
3. After each feature, run the verification steps in AGENTS.md, fix what they find, and tell me what you built and what comes next.
## Rules
- Ask me before you add a dependency, delete a file, or change sign-in, billing or the admin panel.
- Leave the parts of the kit this product doesn't use as they are.
Done when every first-version feature works for a signed-in team and the AGENTS.md checks pass.
